Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

The man who split the atom's smallest piece

J.J. Thomson identified the electron in 1897 while working at the Cavendish Laboratory in Cambridge, showing that cathode rays were made of particles far lighter than any known atom. His discovery overturned the idea that atoms were indivisible. Thomson later won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1906, and his son George went on to win the same prize for showing that electrons behave like waves.

A capital with a complicated neighbour

Havana has been Cuba's capital since the colonial era and remains the island's political, cultural and economic centre. Its old town, Habana Vieja, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site known for Spanish colonial architecture, fortifications and vintage cars. Just 150 kilometres away lies Florida, which has shaped the city's history through migration, trade and politics for well over a century.

The gas that lights up city signs

Neon gets its name from the Greek word for "new", and its symbol Ne comes from that same root. It is a noble gas, meaning it rarely reacts with other elements, which is why it was so hard to isolate in the first place. When electricity passes through neon in a glass tube, it glows with a distinctive orange-red light - the original "neon" sign, though many modern signs use other gases to produce different colours.

A bear, a forest and a real place

Winnie-the-Pooh's home, the Hundred Acre Wood, is based on Ashdown Forest in East Sussex, England, where A.A. Milne walked with his son Christopher Robin. The real forest covers roughly 2,500 hectares of heathland, and the bridge where Pooh and friends played "Poohsticks" still draws visitors. The bear himself was named after a real Canadian black bear called Winnipeg, a mascot adopted by a London zoo during the First World War.
