Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A capital city shaped by colonial history

Paramaribo sits on the banks of the Suriname River, roughly fifteen kilometres from the Atlantic coast. The city's historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognised for its blend of Dutch colonial architecture and local building traditions. Suriname itself is the smallest sovereign state in South America, and Dutch remains its official language, a reminder of the former colony of Dutch Guiana.

The voyage that changed biology

Charles Darwin's ideas about natural selection were not formed in a single moment of inspiration. His five-year journey aboard HMS Beagle, beginning in 1831, gave him extensive opportunities to observe fossils, plants and animals across South America and the Galápagos Islands. On the Origin of Species appeared more than twenty years after the voyage ended, in 1859, and presented a carefully assembled argument that species change over time through natural selection.

Dickens and the Victorian Christmas revival

A Christmas Carol was published in December 1843 and sold out its initial print run within days. The story of Ebenezer Scrooge arrived at a time when many older Christmas traditions were being revived and reshaped in Britain. Charles Dickens wrote the novella quickly, partly because he needed money, but its themes of generosity, memory and social responsibility gave it a life far beyond its original commercial purpose.

The surprising scale of New Caledonia's lagoon

The lagoon surrounding New Caledonia is not a single enclosed body of water but a vast system of reefs, islets and open water in the South Pacific. It covers an area of around 24,000 square kilometres, making it the largest lagoon on Earth. UNESCO lists it as a World Heritage Site, and its reefs contain an extraordinary diversity of marine life, including many species found nowhere else.
