Lake Victoria is bordered by Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania, making it one of the few major lakes in the world divided among three countries. It is also Africa's largest lake by surface area and a vital source of fish and fresh water for millions of people. Its shores were once the heart of several kingdoms and later became key sites of colonial exploration.
Vincent van Gogh painted The Starry Night in 1889 while staying at an asylum in Saint-Remy-de-Provence, in southern France. He considered it a study rather than a finished masterpiece, and it was not widely celebrated during his lifetime. Today it hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York and is among the most reproduced images in art history.
Charles Darwin developed his theory of evolution by natural selection after years of observation, including his voyage on HMS Beagle. He sat on the idea for decades before publishing On the Origin of Species in 1859. Alfred Russel Wallace independently reached similar conclusions, which finally pushed Darwin to publish.
The blue whale is not only the biggest whale but the largest animal known to have lived on Earth, bigger than any dinosaur. It can reach around 30 metres in length and weigh as much as 150 tonnes. Despite its size, it feeds mainly on tiny krill, consuming up to several tonnes a day during feeding season.
