Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A capital on the Dnipro

Kyiv is one of the oldest cities in Eastern Europe, with a history that stretches back more than 1,400 years. It was the centre of Kyivan Rus, a medieval state that shaped the cultural and religious identity of much of the region. Today it is home to around three million people and remains Ukraine's political, economic and cultural heart.

A rivalry that shaped the modern world

The Cold War was a decades-long standoff between the United States and the Soviet Union, along with their respective allies. It dominated international politics for most of the 20th century, from the late 1940s until the Soviet Union's dissolution in 1991. Although the two superpowers never fought each other directly, the conflict drove an arms race, a space race and proxy wars around the globe.

Vietnam's northern capital

Hanoi has served as Vietnam's capital for centuries, apart from a period when the country was divided and it acted as the capital of North Vietnam. Its name means "inside the river", a reference to the Red River that curves around the city. Ho Chi Minh City, the country's largest metropolis, lies roughly 1,100 kilometres to the south.

Fermium and the man behind the name

Fermium is a synthetic element that does not occur naturally in any meaningful quantity. It was discovered in the fallout of the first hydrogen bomb test in 1952 and later named after the physicist Enrico Fermi, one of the architects of nuclear science. Its chemical symbol, Fm, follows the convention of using the element's initial letter plus one more, since F alone was already taken by fluorine.

A film that defined 1939

Gone with the Wind premiered in 1939, a year often called one of the greatest in Hollywood history. Based on Margaret Mitchell's novel, the Civil War epic ran for nearly four hours and went on to win multiple Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It remains one of the highest-grossing films ever made when adjusted for inflation.
