Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

The waterfall that drops off a flat-topped mountain

Angel Falls in Venezuela plunges from Auyán-Tepui, a table-top mountain known as a tepui, in the Guiana Highlands. At roughly 979 metres, it is so tall that much of the water turns to mist before reaching the ground below. The falls are named after Jimmie Angel, an American aviator who flew over the site in the 1930s while searching for gold. Indigenous Pemón people call it Kerepakupai Merú, and it remains one of Venezuela's most famous natural landmarks.

The name behind the hot sauce

Tabasco sauce takes its name not from a recipe but from a place: the Mexican state of Tabasco, on the southern Gulf coast. The McIlhenny family, who created the pepper sauce in Louisiana in the late 1860s, chose the name to honour the region where the key tabasco pepper variety originated. It is a neat example of how a product can carry a geographical name long after it has travelled far from its source.

Picasso's Spanish roots

Pablo Picasso was born in Málaga, in southern Spain, in 1881, and Spanish identity stayed with him throughout his life. He spent much of his adult career in France, yet he never took French citizenship. His early years in Spain, and later in Barcelona, shaped the themes and colours of his Blue and Rose periods before he moved on to Cubism.

A capital on the Ganges delta

Dhaka, the capital of Bangladesh, sits on the Buriganga River in the heart of the Ganges Delta, the largest river delta in the world. The city is one of the most densely populated in the world and has a long history as a centre of trade, textiles and Mughal architecture. Its older quarters, including the Lalbagh Fort, still reflect that Mughal past.
