The Mekong begins on the Tibetan Plateau and runs roughly 4,350 kilometres before emptying into the South China Sea, passing through China, Myanmar, Laos, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. Only the Amazon and the Nile carry more water among the world's great rivers. Its lower basin supports one of the most productive inland fisheries on Earth, which is why so many communities along its banks depend on it for both food and income.
Sri Lanka has two capitals: Colombo is the commercial capital, while Sri Jayawardenepura Kotte serves as the legislative capital. Colombo is by far the larger and better known of the two, which is why it is so often mistaken for the country's only capital. Male, meanwhile, is the capital of the Maldives, a nearby island nation that is easily confused with Sri Lanka on a map.
The Statue of Liberty was a gift from France, but it did not arrive fully assembled. Designed by sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi with an internal framework engineered by Gustave Eiffel, it was built in France, shipped to New York in crates, and reassembled on Bedloe's Island, now Liberty Island. It was dedicated in 1886.
Zora Neale Hurston published "Their Eyes Were Watching God" in 1937, and it received mixed reviews at the time, with some critics in the Black literary establishment finding its use of dialect problematic. Hurston died in poverty in 1960, and her work fell out of print. It was largely thanks to the writer Alice Walker that the novel was rediscovered and reissued, and it is now considered a cornerstone of African American literature.
The Woodstock Music and Art Fair took place in August 1969 on a dairy farm in Bethel, New York. Organisers expected around 50,000 people, but roughly 400,000 turned up, turning the event into a logistical scramble that somehow became a cultural landmark. Performers included Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, The Who and Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young.
