Iguazu Falls sits on the border between Brazil and Argentina, which is why visitors can approach it from two very different sides. The Argentine side offers walkways that thread close to the individual cascades, while the Brazilian side is known for wide panoramic views of the whole horseshoe-shaped drop. The two countries have even competed over which side gives the better experience - a friendly rivalry that has lasted for decades.
Tabasco sauce takes its name from the Mexican state of Tabasco, even though it was created in the United States in the late 1860s by Edmund McIlhenny, a banker from Louisiana. He grew tabasco peppers on Avery Island and aged the mash in wooden barrels, a method the company still uses today. It is a rare example of a condiment whose name points to a region it was never actually produced in.
The attack on Pearl Harbor took place in 1941, on the morning of 7 December. It pushed the United States into the Second World War within a day, transforming a conflict that had already been raging in Europe and Asia into a genuinely global one. The date has since become one of the most recognisable in twentieth-century history.
Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia, literally translates as "red hero", a name it received in the 1920s in honour of a revolutionary figure. It is home to roughly half of Mongolia's population, making it one of the most dominant capital cities in the world relative to its country's size. The surrounding landscape shifts quickly from dense urban streets to open steppe.
The "CZ" on a number plate comes from Czechia, the short English name the country adopted in 2016. The code itself is older, derived from the Czech word "Česko", and it appears not only on cars but also on internet domains and Olympic jerseys. It replaced "CZ" as a formal country abbreviation only gradually, since many institutions still used the longer "Czech Republic".
