Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A currency with two spellings

Thailand's currency is usually written as the baht, though "bath" is a common misspelling. The baht has a long history and is subdivided into 100 satang, with coins issued in satang values still in circulation. Thailand is also notable for having one of the more stable currencies in Southeast Asia.

Two capitals, one country

The Netherlands has an unusual arrangement: Amsterdam is the official capital, but the government, parliament and royal residence are all in The Hague. This split is a legacy of the country's political history, and it regularly trips up visitors who assume the seat of government must also be the capital.

Venice and its lagoon

Venice sits on a group of small islands in a shallow lagoon in the Adriatic Sea, in northern Italy. Instead of roads, the historic centre is linked by canals and bridges, and everyday transport happens by boat or on foot. The city's layout reflects how its early inhabitants built on marshy ground for protection.

Asimov's three laws

Isaac Asimov introduced the Three Laws of Robotics in his 1942 short story "Runaround". The laws state that a robot may not injure a human being, must obey human orders except where that would cause harm, and must protect its own existence unless doing so conflicts with the first two. Asimov used them as a narrative device to explore the unexpected consequences of apparently simple rules.

Doves and pigeons

There is no scientific distinction between doves and pigeons - both belong to the family Columbidae. In everyday English, "dove" tends to describe smaller, slimmer species, while "pigeon" is used for larger, stockier ones. The rock dove, for instance, is the wild ancestor of the common city pigeon.
