Dubai tends to dominate the headlines, thanks to its skyscrapers and its status as a global travel and business hub. The capital of the United Arab Emirates, however, is Abu Dhabi, which is also the largest of the seven emirates by area. The UAE was formed in 1971 when several Gulf states came together, and Abu Dhabi has served as the seat of the federal government ever since.
Many people still picture Yangon as Myanmar's leading city, and it remains the country's largest urban centre. In 2005, however, the government began moving the administration to Naypyidaw, a city built largely from scratch in the centre of the country. It is a striking example of a capital designed by planners rather than shaped gradually by history.
Polar bears are widely considered the largest land predators on Earth, with adult males often weighing several hundred kilograms. Their diet is heavily based on seals, which they hunt from the edge of the sea ice. That dependence on ice makes them especially vulnerable to a warming Arctic, and they are classified as a vulnerable species.
La Paz sits at an elevation of roughly 3,600 metres, making it one of the highest capital cities in the world. It is the administrative capital of Bolivia, while Sucre remains the country's constitutional capital. The thin air at that altitude is a real adjustment for visitors, and many travellers spend their first day simply acclimatising.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands, an archipelago in the Atlantic Ocean. Although the islands lie just off the coast of Morocco, they belong to Spain and form one of its autonomous communities. That mix of Spanish culture, volcanic landscapes and a mild year-round climate has made them a major destination for European travellers.
