The Great Bear Rainforest stretches along the central and northern coast of British Columbia, and roughly 30 First Nations have lived there for thousands of years. It is one of the largest remaining tracts of unlogged temperate rainforest on Earth, and it is also home to the Kermode bear, a rare white-furred subspecies of black bear sometimes called the spirit bear. In 2016, after years of negotiation, the provincial government, logging companies and First Nations agreed to protect a large share of the forest from industrial logging.
Taurus is one of the oldest constellations recognised by humans, and its association with a bull goes back to ancient Mesopotamia, where the bull symbolised fertility and strength. In Greek myth, Zeus famously took the form of a white bull in the story of Europa. The constellation contains the Pleiades star cluster and Aldebaran, a bright red giant that forms the bull's eye. Its zodiac symbol is a simple circle with horns, echoing the animal's head.
The Volga is the longest river in Europe, winding roughly 3,500 kilometres through Russia before emptying into the Caspian Sea. It has been a vital trade route since medieval times, connecting the Baltic region with the Caspian and beyond, and it remains central to Russian identity - so central that the country is sometimes affectionately called "Mother Volga". More than half of Russia's population lives within its drainage basin.
Zinc has been used for centuries - brass, an alloy of copper and zinc, was produced in the ancient world - but it was only isolated as a distinct metal in the 18th century. Its symbol, Zn, comes from the German "Zink". Moscovium is a much newer arrival: a synthetic element first created in a laboratory and named after the Moscow region, where the research institute that helped produce it is located. It sits near the bottom of the periodic table and exists only for fractions of a second before decaying.
