Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A nickname that belongs to more than one bright point in the sky

Venus is often called the Morning Star because it can appear brilliantly in the eastern sky before sunrise, and it is also known as the Evening Star when it lingers after sunset. The name is a little misleading, since Venus is a planet, not a star, and its glow comes from sunlight reflecting off its thick clouds. Because its orbit lies between Earth and the Sun, Venus never wanders far from the Sun in our sky, which is why it shows up only near dawn or dusk.

Why "lead" in a pencil was never really lead

The core of an ordinary pencil is graphite, a form of carbon, not the metal lead. The confusion is old: when a large graphite deposit was found in England in the 16th century, people thought it was a kind of lead ore, and the name stuck. Graphite leaves marks because its layers slide off easily onto paper. Modern pencil "lead" is usually graphite mixed with clay, and the ratio of the two determines how hard or soft the pencil writes.

The continent that holds most of us

Asia is the largest continent by both area and population, stretching from the Mediterranean and the Middle East to the Pacific coast of Russia and Southeast Asia. It contains the world's highest mountains and its lowest land, along with a huge share of the planet's people. That scale is one reason general knowledge quizzes return to it so often: a single continent covers a remarkable range of countries, languages and climates.

Two capitals that are easy to mix up

Warsaw is the capital of Poland, though Krakow served as a royal capital for centuries and remains one of the country's most visited cities. The name Warsaw appears in English, while Poles call it Warszawa. Burkina Faso's capital, Ouagadougou, is a much less familiar name to many players, which is exactly what makes it a good quiz question: it rewards those who have spent time with a map of West Africa.
