Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

The Nile is not just Africa's longest river

The Nile has been central to life in north-eastern Africa for thousands of years. It flows through several countries, but its two main tributaries, the White Nile and the Blue Nile, meet in Sudan before continuing north through Egypt to the Mediterranean. Ancient Egyptian civilisation depended on its annual floods, which deposited fertile silt on the surrounding land. Today the river remains vital for agriculture, drinking water and transport.

Johannes Gutenberg did not invent printing itself

What Gutenberg introduced in mid-15th-century Europe was a practical system using movable metal type. Printing with wooden blocks already existed in East Asia, and movable type had been developed in China and Korea earlier. Gutenberg's contribution was to combine existing ideas into a reliable, efficient process, famously demonstrated by his printed Bible. That innovation dramatically lowered the cost of producing books and helped spread literacy and new ideas across Europe.

The fall of the USSR closed a long chapter

When the Soviet Union was formally dissolved in December 1991, it marked the end of a political entity that had existed since 1922. The Cold War had shaped global politics for decades, dividing much of the world into two competing blocs. The dissolution created fifteen independent states, including Russia, Ukraine and the Baltic countries. While the Berlin Wall had fallen two years earlier, it was the end of the USSR itself that finally closed the Cold War era.

Washington, D.C. was built to be neutral ground

The United States capital is not part of any state. The District of Columbia was created from land along the Potomac River, with Maryland and Virginia both contributing territory. The location was chosen partly as a compromise between northern and southern states. Washington was named after George Washington, while the district's name, Columbia, was a poetic name for the United States at the time.
