Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A dancer who kept directing

"Singin' in the Rain" is often credited to Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen, and that shared credit reflects a real partnership: Kelly choreographed and starred, while Donen handled much of the directing, and the two worked side by side on set. The 1952 film became a landmark of the Hollywood musical, famous for its title number and its witty take on the industry's bumpy transition from silent films to sound.

The coloured ring around the pupil

The iris is the pigmented ring of the eye, and its colour comes from the amount and distribution of melanin, the same pigment that tints skin and hair. Hazel eyes are a mix of brown and green tones, which is why they can appear to shift under different lighting. The pupil, by contrast, is simply a gap that lets light in, and the vitreous body is the gel filling the eye behind the lens.

Angola's Portuguese roots

Portuguese is the official language of Angola, a legacy of the country's history as a Portuguese colony until it gained independence in 1975. It remains the language of government, education and the media, even though many Angolans also speak national languages such as Umbundu, Kimbundu and Kikongo at home. This makes Angola one of several African countries where Portuguese is the official tongue.

Naming a new world

The name America comes from Amerigo Vespucci, an Italian navigator and explorer who sailed to the New World around the turn of the sixteenth century. His published accounts of the lands he visited proved influential in Europe, and mapmakers of the era began attaching his name to the southern continent. Christopher Columbus, who reached the Americas earlier, gave his name to Colombia and the District of Columbia rather than to the continents themselves.
