Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A journey through the medieval afterlife

Dante Alighieri wrote The Divine Comedy in the early 14th century, and the poem is structured as a journey through the three realms of the afterlife: Hell (Inferno), Purgatory (Purgatorio) and Paradise (Paradiso). Guided first by the Roman poet Virgil and later by Beatrice, Dante meets historical figures, popes and mythological characters along the way. The work helped establish the Tuscan dialect as a literary standard for Italian.

Why the brown bear stands for Finland

The brown bear is Finland's national animal, a status it holds partly because it features prominently in Finnish folklore and mythology. In Finnish, the bear is often called "karhu", though older euphemisms like "mesikämmen" (honey-paw) were used because saying the animal's true name was considered taboo. Bears still roam Finland's eastern forests today.

Mercury's confusing symbol

Mercury's chemical symbol is Hg, which comes from its Latin name "hydrargyrum", meaning "water-silver". The element is the only metal that is liquid at room temperature, which is why it was long used in thermometers and barometers before health concerns limited its use. Its English name honours the Roman god Mercury, known for his speed.

The world's smallest state

Vatican City covers roughly 44 hectares and is the smallest independent state in the world by both area and population. It became a sovereign state in 1929 under the Lateran Treaty, signed with Italy. Despite its size, it draws millions of visitors each year to St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums.

The Pacific's staggering scale

The Pacific Ocean is the largest and deepest of Earth's oceans, covering more area than all the land on the planet combined. It stretches from the Arctic in the north to the Southern Ocean, and contains the Mariana Trench, the deepest known point on Earth. Its name, meaning "peaceful sea", was given by the explorer Ferdinand Magellan.
