The compass is traditionally traced back to China, where magnetised needles were used for divination and later for navigation. By the Song dynasty, compasses were being fitted to ships, and knowledge of the device gradually travelled along trade routes to the Arab world and Europe. It is hard to overstate the impact: for the first time, sailors could hold a rough heading even when clouds hid the sun and stars.
1848 is remembered as the year of revolutions. Starting in Sicily in January and spreading to Paris, Vienna, Berlin, Milan and beyond, uprisings challenged monarchies and demanded constitutions, national unity and social reform. Many of the revolts were eventually suppressed, yet they left a lasting mark: the ideas of liberalism and nationalism that shaped later European politics did not disappear.
Leonardo da Vinci painted the Mona Lisa in the early 16th century. It is a small poplar panel portrait, now displayed in the Louvre in Paris, and its fame rests partly on Leonardo's use of sfumato - soft, blended transitions between tones that give the face its famously elusive expression. The painting's theft from the Louvre in 1911, and its recovery two years later, helped turn it into a global icon.
Venice sits on a group of small islands in a lagoon, and the sea that washes its shores is the Adriatic. The Adriatic separates the Italian peninsula from the Balkan peninsula and has long been a busy corridor for trade, fishing and travel. For Venice itself, the water was never just a backdrop: it was the foundation of the city's wealth and its defensive advantage.
Indonesia has the most volcanoes of any country, a consequence of its position along the Pacific Ring of Fire, where tectonic plates collide and magma rises toward the surface. The archipelago includes famous peaks such as Krakatoa and Mount Merapi. This geology brings fertile soils and dramatic landscapes, but also serious hazards for the millions of people living nearby.
