Pablo Picasso painted "Guernica" in response to the bombing of the Basque town of Guernica during the Spanish Civil War. The huge canvas, shown at the 1937 Paris International Exposition, uses black, white and grey tones to convey grief and violence rather than depicting the attack literally. It is now held by the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Zora Neale Hurston published "Their Eyes Were Watching God" in 1937. Set in Florida, it follows Janie Crawford through three marriages as she searches for her own identity. The book was largely overlooked for decades before later writers and scholars championed it, and it is now considered a landmark of African American literature.

The Caucasus Mountains stretch between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. The range is shared by several countries, including Armenia, Georgia, Russia and Azerbaijan, and contains Mount Elbrus, the highest peak in Europe. The region is known for its remarkable linguistic and cultural diversity.
Pristina is the capital of Kosovo, a landlocked country in the Balkans. Vilnius, the capital of Lithuania, is one of the oldest cities in the Baltic region and its historic old town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Both cities reflect the layered histories of their regions.
