Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

Austria's currency has changed more than once

Austria has not always used the euro. Before 2002, the country's currency was the Austrian schilling, which had itself replaced the krone after the First World War. When the euro was introduced as physical cash in twelve countries in 2002, Austria was among the first wave. Today the euro is the official currency of a large group of member states, but not all of them - which is why a trip from Vienna to Prague or Budapest still means changing money.

A shipwreck that became a political painting

Théodore Géricault's "The Raft of the Medusa" depicts the aftermath of the wreck of a French naval frigate off the coast of West Africa in 1816. The survivors endured starvation, thirst and cannibalism on a makeshift raft before rescue. Géricault interviewed survivors and even studied corpses to get the details right. When the painting appeared at the Paris Salon, its unflinching realism and its implicit criticism of a careless, aristocratic captain caused a sensation.

The Ganges-Brahmaputra delta and the Euphrates

Deltas form where rivers slow down and drop their sediment before meeting the sea. The Ganges-Brahmaputra delta, shared mainly by Bangladesh and India, is the largest in the world and one of the most densely populated regions on Earth. The Euphrates tells a different story: it rises in Turkey and flows through Syria and Iraq, and along with the Tigris it defined Mesopotamia, often called the cradle of civilisation.

Pizzicato: when strings are plucked, not bowed

The Italian term "pizzicato" means plucked, and it tells a string player to use the fingers instead of the bow. Cellos, violins, violas and double basses can all play pizzicato, which produces a short, percussive sound. Saxophones and clarinets are wind instruments, so the instruction simply does not apply to them. Composers often use pizzicato for comic or eerie effects - think of the creeping footsteps in a suspense score.
