Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A dessert that tells you where you are

Panna cotta means "cooked cream" in Italian, and it comes from the northern regions of the country, where cream, sugar and gelatine are set into a softly wobbling mould. It is one of the clearest examples of how a dessert can act as a regional signature: simple ingredients, little fuss, and a identity tied to a specific place. Order it in Piedmont and you are eating something close to its original home.

A playwright who wrote memory itself

Tennessee Williams based much of "The Glass Menagerie" on his own family, including a fragile sister and an absent father, and the play made his name when it opened on Broadway in 1945. Its narrator, Tom, speaks directly to the audience and admits the story is remembered rather than reported, which was unusual for its time. That blurred line between memory and truth became a hallmark of Williams's later work, including "A Streetcar Named Desire".

When everyday words become clinical ones

Hydrophobia literally means "fear of water", but it is also the old medical term for a symptom of rabies, in which patients struggle to swallow and react with panic to liquids. That double life shows how everyday language and clinical vocabulary often overlap. The same suffix, -phobia, appears in arachnophobia and claustrophobia, both built from Greek roots and both now used far beyond medicine.

Two answers that share a continent

Brazil and the Andes appear in separate questions, but they sit on the same landmass and tell very different stories. Brazil covers roughly half of South America and is the only Portuguese-speaking country in the Americas, a legacy of the Treaty of Tordesillas. The Andes, meanwhile, run along the western edge of the continent, stretching through seven countries from Venezuela to Chile.
