Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A wizard, a headmaster and a loyal friend

Hedvig is the Swedish name of Harry Potter's owl, Hedwig, which is why she turns up in a question alongside Dumbledore and Neville Longbottom. In J.K. Rowling's series, Hedwig is Harry's snowy owl and constant companion, Dumbledore is the headmaster of Hogwarts, and Neville grows from a timid first-year into one of Harry's bravest allies. The books have been translated into dozens of languages, and character names often change along the way.

The sauna's deep roots in the north

Finland is the classic answer, and the sauna is woven into Finnish life: there are roughly as many saunas as there are people in the country. For centuries they have served as places to bathe, relax and even give birth, and the tradition is protected as intangible cultural heritage. A proper Finnish sauna is hot and dry, often followed by a plunge into cold water or snow.

From castaway tale to Terminator one-liners

Jules Verne's The Mysterious Island follows a group of castaways who survive a balloon crash and rebuild a small civilisation on a remote island. Verne, a French writer, is often called a father of science fiction for novels such as Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Seas. A very different kind of fame belongs to Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose deadpan "I'll be back" in The Terminator became one of cinema's most quoted lines.

Rome's most famous staircase

The Spanish Steps climb the slope between the Piazza di Spagna and the church of Trinita dei Monti in Rome. Despite the name, they were built by an Italian architect in the 18th century and paid for with French money; the "Spanish" label comes from the square below, once home to the Spanish embassy. Today they are a protected monument, and sitting on the steps is no longer allowed.
