Honduras's lempira takes its name from Lempira, an indigenous leader who resisted Spanish conquest in the sixteenth century. Honduras is not the only country in the region with its own currency: Panama uses the balboa, named after the explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa, while El Salvador adopted the US dollar in 2001. The lempira has been Honduras's official currency since the 1930s.
Jean-Luc Godard's "Breathless" (1960) became one of the defining films of the French New Wave, a movement of young directors who rejected polished studio conventions in favour of location shooting and loose, spontaneous storytelling. Godard's contemporary François Truffaut was another leading figure of the movement, and the two men briefly collaborated early in their careers. "Breathless" starred Jean-Paul Belmondo and American actress Jean Seberg.
The Beatles' first appearance on "The Ed Sullivan Show" took place in February 1964, drawing an estimated television audience of more than 70 million viewers in the United States. The band played five songs, opening with "All My Loving". The broadcast is often credited with helping to ignite Beatlemania in America and with reshaping the US music industry's interest in British acts.
Vatican City covers roughly 44 hectares and is both the smallest country in the world and the spiritual centre of the Roman Catholic Church. It became an independent state in 1929 under the Lateran Treaty, signed with Italy. Despite its size, it draws millions of visitors each year to St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums.
Switzerland's reputation for watches, cheese and chocolate rests on centuries of craft. Swiss watchmaking grew from workshops in Geneva and the Jura mountains, while cheeses such as Gruyère and Emmental have been produced in the country for hundreds of years. Swiss chocolate, meanwhile, became a global industry in the nineteenth century, when producers like Daniel Peter and Henri Nestlé helped develop milk chocolate.
