Hieronymus Bosch painted "The Garden of Earthly Delights" around the turn of the sixteenth century, and it has baffled viewers ever since. The triptych moves from Eden on the left panel to a teeming, pleasure-filled central scene and finally to a dark, nightmarish hell on the right. Nobody knows exactly what Bosch intended, which is part of why the painting still draws crowds to the Prado in Madrid.
Bern is Switzerland's capital, yet Zurich and Geneva are far better known internationally. The same pattern appears in the quiz's Welsh question: Cardiff is the capital, while cities like Swansea and Newport are also significant. Many countries separate political and economic power this way, which is why "capital" and "largest city" are not always the same place.
On 17 December 1903, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina, the Wright brothers achieved the first sustained, controlled flight of a powered aircraft. The first flight lasted only about twelve seconds and covered roughly 36 metres - less than the wingspan of a modern airliner. Wilbur and Orville, bicycle makers from Ohio, built their success on years of testing gliders and designing their own propeller.
F. Scott Fitzgerald wrote "Tender Is the Night" in 1934, several years after "The Great Gatsby." The novel follows an American psychiatrist and his troubled marriage to a wealthy patient, moving between the French Riviera and Swiss clinics. Fitzgerald drew on his own experiences with his wife Zelda, and the book is often read as a portrait of the expatriate world he knew well.
