A capital city built on a small island

Valletta, the capital of Malta, is one of the smallest capital cities in Europe and sits on a peninsula in the Mediterranean. The city is named after Jean Parisot de Valette, the Grand Master of the Knights of Malta who led the defence of the island during the Great Siege of 1565. Its grid of narrow streets and fortifications earned it UNESCO World Heritage status, and the entire city is only about 0.8 square kilometres in size.

When Austria traded its currency for the euro

The Austrian schilling served as the country's currency from 1925 until 2002, when it was replaced by the euro. For a short transition period, both currencies circulated side by side, and shoppers had to juggle two sets of prices. The fixed conversion rate was set at roughly 13.76 schillings to one euro, a number many Austrians still remember.

The largest carnivorous dinosaur is not the one you think

Spinosaurus, not Tyrannosaurus Rex, is generally considered the largest known carnivorous dinosaur, with some estimates putting its length at around 15 metres. Its most distinctive feature was a long, crocodile-like snout and a large sail along its back formed by elongated spines. Fossils suggest it spent much of its time near water, making it an unusual predator among dinosaurs.

Raphael's tribute to ancient thinkers

"The School of Athens" was painted by Raphael in the early 16th century as part of the decoration of the Vatican's Apostolic Palace. The fresco gathers philosophers, mathematicians and scientists of classical antiquity into a single grand scene, with Plato and Aristotle at the centre. It is often read as a celebration of reason and a meeting point between ancient thought and Renaissance ideals.
