Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

An archipelago nation that barely fits on the map

The Seychelles, the answer to our first question, is not just small in population but also in land area - it consists of around 115 islands scattered across the Indian Ocean, east of mainland Africa. Its total landmass is tiny compared to continental neighbours, yet its exclusive economic zone stretches over a vast stretch of ocean. The capital, Victoria, is one of the smallest capital cities in the world.

The war that reshaped the twentieth century

World War II ended in 1945, firmly within the 20th century, after six years of conflict that touched nearly every corner of the globe. The war redrew borders, accelerated decolonisation and led to the founding of the United Nations. Its aftermath shaped the Cold War and much of the political map we still recognise today.

The lake that sits between two nations

Lake Titicaca, straddling the border of Peru and Bolivia, is often cited as the highest large navigable lake in the world, sitting at over 3,800 metres above sea level. It holds cultural significance for the Andean peoples, and its waters support communities on both sides. The Uros people famously built floating islands from reeds on its surface.

A composer who redefined the musical

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the composer of Evita, has been one of the most commercially successful figures in musical theatre. Evita, which premiered in London in 1978, tells the story of Eva Perón, the Argentine first lady. The show helped cement Lloyd Webber's reputation alongside works like Jesus Christ Superstar and The Phantom of the Opera.

A month in the life of the moon

The moon takes roughly 27 days to orbit the Earth, a period known as the sidereal month. Because the Earth is also moving around the sun, the time between two identical moon phases - the synodic month - is slightly longer, at about 29.5 days. That difference explains why the lunar calendar drifts relative to the solar one.
