Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A canal that changed global trade

The Suez Canal opened in 1869, connecting the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and allowing ships to travel between Europe and Asia without sailing around Africa. French diplomat Ferdinand de Lesseps led the project, though Britain and France later shared control of the waterway. Its strategic importance became painfully clear in 1956, when Egypt nationalised the canal and triggered an international crisis.

Why 24 carats means pure gold

The carat system for gold goes back to ancient traders who weighed gold against carob seeds, which were remarkably consistent in weight. Pure gold is defined as 24 carats, meaning 24 out of 24 parts are gold with no alloy mixed in. Because pure gold is very soft, most jewellery uses 18 or 14 carats, blending gold with metals like copper or silver for durability.

The bagpipes were not born in Scotland

Scotland may be the country most associated with the bagpipes, but similar instruments appear in ancient records from across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East. Roman writers described a pipe-and-bag instrument, and versions exist in Spain, Italy, Turkey and India. Scottish Highland pipes became famous through military regiments and later through pipe bands around the world.

Portugal and the Greenwich meridian

Portugal follows Greenwich Mean Time, the time standard based on the Royal Observatory in London. Mainland Portugal sits close to the meridian, so its clocks match the UK for most of the year, though it observes daylight saving on a different schedule. Interestingly, the Azores, part of Portugal, run two hours behind the mainland.

Jack London's harsh northern world

Jack London wrote The Call of the Wild in 1903, drawing on his own experiences in the Klondike Gold Rush. The novel follows Buck, a domestic dog stolen and sold into service as a sled dog in the Yukon. London's vivid portrayal of survival in the frozen north made the book a lasting classic of American adventure literature.
