The Andes stretch along the western edge of South America for thousands of kilometres, and the animals that thrive there have evolved remarkable adaptations for thin air and cold nights. The alpaca is one of the best known: a domesticated camelid bred for its fleece for centuries, and a close relative of the wild vicuna. Its wool is prized for being fine, light and warm, which is why alpaca garments remain a luxury export for countries such as Peru and Bolivia.
James Bond first appeared in Ian Fleming's 1953 novel Casino Royale, at the height of the Cold War, and the film series has now spanned more than six decades. Daniel Craig took on the role in Casino Royale (2006) and played 007 in Quantum of Solace, part of a five-film run that ended with No Time to Die. Few fictional characters have been reinterpreted so many times while staying recognisable.
The equator crosses three continents and a long list of countries, including Somalia in the Horn of Africa. Because it marks the division between the Northern and Southern Hemispheres, it shapes climate, daylight patterns and even the way ships and aircraft navigate. Yet standing on it, you would see nothing at all: the line exists on maps and in GPS coordinates, not in the landscape.
The League of Nations was established in 1920, in the aftermath of the First World War, as the first international organisation with the aim of keeping peace between states. It was based in Geneva and counted dozens of members at its peak, though several major powers never joined or later left. Its inability to prevent the Second World War led to its replacement by the United Nations in 1945.
Moroni is the capital of Comoros, an island nation in the Indian Ocean between Mozambique and Madagascar. The country is made up of several volcanic islands, and Moroni sits on the largest of them, Grande Comore. Comoros is one of the smallest African nations by population, which is part of why its capital rarely comes up in everyday conversation.
