J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan began as a stage play in 1904 before he turned it into the novel Peter and Wendy in 1911, which opens with the line about all children growing up except one. Barrie later gave the copyright of the play to Great Ormond Street Hospital in London, a gift that has supported the hospital for decades. The story of the boy who refuses to grow up has since been retold in countless films, musicals and prequels.
Pablo Picasso painted Guernica in 1937 after the bombing of the Basque town of the same name during the Spanish Civil War. The huge canvas, shown in muted greys, blacks and whites, became one of the most powerful anti-war images of the twentieth century. Picasso insisted the painting remain in Spain once democracy returned, and it now hangs in the Museo Reina Sofia in Madrid.
Russia spans eleven time zones, more than any other country, stretching from the Baltic Sea to the Pacific. China, by contrast, covers roughly the same east-west distance but officially uses a single time zone, so the sun can rise hours later in Xinjiang than in Beijing. The United States, including its territories, also has multiple zones, but fewer than Russia's eleven.
The symbol Cu for copper comes from cuprum, the Latin word for the metal, which itself traces back to Cyprus, an island famous in antiquity for its copper mines. Copper was one of the first metals humans worked with, and it remains essential today in wiring, plumbing and electronics. Its reddish colour and ability to conduct electricity make it easy to spot in everyday life.
Kingston, the capital of Jamaica, sits on the island's southeastern coast and is its largest city, as well as a major port. Capitals such as Doha in Qatar and Kingston often concentrate a country's political, cultural and economic life in one place. Smaller island nations in particular tend to channel much of their trade and population through a single coastal hub.
