Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A landlocked country with a global reputation

Switzerland's association with watches, cheese and chocolate is no accident. Watchmaking grew in the Jura region during the long winter months, when farming was impossible and precision work indoors made sense. Cheese production, meanwhile, developed partly as a way to preserve milk in mountain communities with limited transport. Chocolate arrived later, but Swiss makers turned it into an industry known worldwide.

The Andes and the countries they cross

The Andes form the world's longest continental mountain range, stretching along the western edge of South America. They pass through several countries, including Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. That is why "which country is the Andes in" can feel misleading: the range is not confined to one nation. It also shapes climate, agriculture and settlement patterns across the region.

A bird built for running, not flying

The emu is a large flightless bird native to Australia. Like the ostrich, it belongs to a group called ratites, birds that lack a keel on the breastbone where flight muscles normally attach. Instead of flying, emus are strong runners and can cover long distances. They are also an important part of Australian wildlife and appear on the country's coat of arms.

Methane and the gas we use at home

Natural gas is mostly methane, a simple hydrocarbon with one carbon atom and four hydrogen atoms. It burns relatively cleanly compared with coal or oil, which is why it is widely used for heating, cooking and electricity generation. Methane is also a potent greenhouse gas when released into the atmosphere, so leaks matter.

Edith Wharton and old New York

Edith Wharton wrote "The Age of Innocence", a novel set in the upper-class society of New York in the 1870s. Wharton knew that world intimately, having grown up in it, and her fiction often examines its strict social codes. The book won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1921, making Wharton the first woman to receive it.
