Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

The boy wizard who grew up in print

"Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets" is the second book in J.K. Rowling's seven-part series, published in 1998, two years after the first instalment introduced Hogwarts to readers. The series went on to sell hundreds of millions of copies worldwide and was adapted into a blockbuster film franchise. The other two titles offered in the question belong to different authors entirely - Dan Brown wrote "Digital Fortress", while Rick Riordan created Percy Jackson.

A capital with a harbour and a history

Kingston sits on the southeastern coast of Jamaica, sheltered by the world's seventh-largest natural harbour. It became the island's capital in 1872, replacing Spanish Town, and today it is Jamaica's largest city as well as its cultural and economic centre. The city is also the birthplace of reggae legend Bob Marley, whose former home is now a museum.

Mountains that span borders

The Tien Shan, whose name means "Celestial Mountains" in Chinese, is one of the great mountain systems of Central Asia. Its peaks stretch across several countries, with the highest and most extensive sections lying in Kyrgyzstan and neighbouring China, and foothills reaching into Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan. The range is home to some of the world's largest glaciers outside the polar regions.

A planet where you would weigh much more

Jupiter's gravity is roughly two and a half times stronger than Earth's, a consequence of its enormous mass - more than twice that of all the other planets in the Solar System combined. A person who weighs 70 kilograms on Earth would feel closer to 175 kilograms at Jupiter's cloud tops. Venus, despite being closer in size to Earth, has slightly weaker surface gravity.

The symbol that hides a Latin name

Sodium's chemical symbol, Na, comes from "natrium", the Latin name for the element - a reminder that many symbols do not match their English names. The same is true of potassium (K, from kalium) and iron (Fe, from ferrum). Sodium is a soft, silvery metal that reacts vigorously with water and is essential to nerve function and fluid balance in the human body.
