Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A mountain range where continents meet

The Caucasus Mountains stretch between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, and they are usually divided into the Greater Caucasus in the north and the Lesser Caucasus in the south. The range runs through Russia, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan, which is why the region is often described as a meeting point between Europe and Asia. Mount Elbrus, in the Russian part of the Greater Caucasus, is the highest peak in Europe.

The Falklands, a short war with a long aftermath

The Falklands War of 1982 was fought between Argentina and Britain over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as the Islas Malvinas. Argentina invaded in April, and British forces retook the islands before the conflict ended in June. The war lasted only about ten weeks, but it shaped politics in both countries for years and remains a sensitive subject in Argentina.

Kemet, the black land

Ancient Egyptians called their country Kemet, usually translated as "the black land", a reference to the dark, fertile soil deposited by the Nile's annual floods. The name we use today, Egypt, comes from the Greek Aigyptos. Other options in this quiz belong to different places entirely: Siam was the old name of Thailand, and Gaul was the Roman name for the region of modern France.

How constellations got their names

A constellation is a group of stars that appears to form a pattern in the night sky. The 88 constellations recognised today mostly carry names from ancient Greek and Roman tradition, such as Orion, Leo and Scorpius. The stars within one constellation are often enormously far apart and simply happen to line up from our viewpoint on Earth.

Lloyd Webber and the many lives of Cats

Andrew Lloyd Webber composed the music for Cats, which opened in London in 1981 and went on to become one of the longest-running musicals in West End and Broadway history. Its songs, including "Memory", are based on poems by T. S. Eliot from Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats. Elton John, one of the other names in the quiz, wrote the music for The Lion King instead.
