Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A small country with a long memory

Montenegro sits on the Balkan Peninsula, its coastline hugging the Adriatic Sea. Its name means "black mountain", a reference to Mount Lovcen, the dark, pine-covered peak that has long served as a symbol of the country. For much of the 20th century it was part of Yugoslavia, and it became an independent state only in 2006, making it one of Europe's youngest countries.

Copper, Cyprus and a Roman habit

The chemical symbol for copper, Cu, comes from the Latin word cuprum, which itself derives from the name of Cyprus. The Romans mined the island heavily, and the metal became so closely associated with it that the place name stuck to the material. That is why an element we use in wiring and coins still carries the memory of a Mediterranean island in its symbol.

Waterloo and the end of an era

The Battle of Waterloo, fought in 1815 near Brussels, ended Napoleon Bonaparte's rule for good. His forces were defeated by a coalition that included British troops under the Duke of Wellington and Prussian forces under Gebhard Leberecht von Blucher. After the battle, Napoleon was exiled to the remote island of Saint Helena in the South Atlantic, where he died in 1821.

The river that anchors a nation

The Volga is the longest river in Europe, winding through central Russia before emptying into the Caspian Sea. It has been a vital trade route for centuries and is often called "Mother Volga" in Russian culture. Cities such as Kazan and Volgograd grew up along its banks, and it remains central to the country's transport and identity.

A planet with a very short day

Jupiter has the shortest day of any planet in our solar system, rotating once in under ten hours despite being the largest planet. That fast spin flattens it slightly at the poles and drives its banded clouds and powerful storms, including the Great Red Spot. For comparison, Earth takes roughly 24 hours to complete a single rotation.
