A treaty that redrew the map

The Treaty of Paris in 1763 ended the Seven Years' War, a conflict fought not only in Europe but also across North America, the Caribbean and India. France ceded much of its North American territory to Britain, a shift that reshaped the balance of power on the continent. In North America the same conflict is often called the French and Indian War.

Why Saturn wears so many rings

Saturn's rings are made mostly of ice particles, along with some rock and dust, and they stretch tens of thousands of kilometres from the planet. Jupiter, Uranus and Neptune also have ring systems, but they are far fainter and were only confirmed by spacecraft. Saturn's are simply the brightest and most extensive.

Sarajevo, the capital of Bosnia and Herzegovina, has long stood at a meeting point of empires and religions, with mosques, synagogues and churches close together in its old town. A novel ahead of its time

La Princesse de Clèves was published anonymously in 1678 and is usually attributed to Madame de La Fayette. Set in the French court, it is often described as one of the earliest psychological novels, focusing on the inner conflict of its heroine rather than on adventure. It remains a landmark of French literature.

The web goes public

The World Wide Web became publicly available in 1991, several years after Tim Berners-Lee proposed it at CERN in 1989. It is easy to confuse the web with the internet itself: the internet is the underlying network, while the web is one service that runs on it.
