Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A composer who reshaped the modern musical

Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote the music for Evita, which opened in London in 1978 with lyrics by Tim Rice. The show follows the life of Eva Perón, the Argentine first lady, and includes the famous song "Don't Cry for Me Argentina". Lloyd Webber's other musicals, such as Cats and The Phantom of the Opera, made him one of the most commercially successful theatre composers of his time.

The old city at the heart of Yemen

Sanaa is the capital of Yemen and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. Its historic core is known for distinctive tower houses decorated with geometric white patterns, and it was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in the 1980s. The city sits at a high altitude, which gives it a cooler climate than many other places in the region.

Why Venus stays so evenly hot

Venus has the most uniform temperature of any planet in the solar system. A thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide traps heat so effectively that the surface stays around 465 degrees Celsius nearly everywhere, day and night, pole to equator. This runaway greenhouse effect makes Venus hotter than Mercury, even though Mercury is much closer to the Sun.

The world's largest rodent

The capybara, native to South America, is the largest living rodent, with adults typically weighing between 35 and 66 kilograms. It is a semi-aquatic animal that lives near rivers and lakes and feeds mainly on grasses. Capybaras are social and often gather in groups, and they have become a popular subject in wildlife photography and on social media.

A painting that captured a revolution

Eugène Delacroix painted Liberty Leading the People in 1830, the same year as the July Revolution in Paris that toppled King Charles X. The work shows a woman personifying Liberty raising the French tricolour and leading a crowd over barricades. It is now held in the Louvre and is considered one of the defining images of Romantic painting.
