Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

A name Rome gave to the north

Caledonia was the Latin name the Romans used for the land we now call Scotland, and it survives in modern place names and poetry. The Romans never fully controlled the region, and Hadrian's Wall, built in the second century AD, marked the northern edge of their empire in Britain. The other two options in the quiz are also real Roman names, but for different places: Pannonia covered parts of the central Danube region, while Helvetia referred to the area of modern Switzerland.

The many faces of Baloo

In Rudyard Kipling's The Jungle Book, Baloo is a bear who teaches the wolf cubs the laws of the jungle, though he is gentler and more comical in Disney's animated version. Kipling published the stories in 1894, drawing on his childhood in India and on folk tales. The book also gave us Mowgli, Bagheera and Shere Khan, characters that have been reimagined in film and television for over a century.

Harper Lee and a single, lasting novel

Harper Lee published To Kill a Mockingbird in 1960, and it won the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction the following year. Set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama, it explores racial injustice through the eyes of a young girl, Scout Finch. For decades it was Lee's only novel, until Go Set a Watchman appeared in 2015, sparking debate about how it related to her famous first book.

A small statue with a big wardrobe

The Manneken Pis in Brussels is a bronze fountain figure of a small boy, and it is one of the city's best-known symbols. What many visitors do not realise is that he has an extensive wardrobe: hundreds of costumes are kept for him, and he is dressed in different outfits for special occasions throughout the year. The tradition turns a modest fountain into a rotating exhibition of costumes from around the world.
