Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

When a capital is not the biggest city

Rome is both the capital and the largest city of Italy, but that pattern does not hold everywhere. In Russia, Moscow is the seat of government while Saint Petersburg, once the imperial capital, remains a major cultural centre. Argentina follows a similar logic in reverse: Buenos Aires dominates national life, yet cities like Córdoba and Rosario are significant in their own right. Capital cities often carry symbolic weight that goes well beyond population figures.

Mercury's quick-footed sign

In astrology, Gemini is associated with Mercury, the planet named after the Roman messenger god. That link explains the sign's traditional connection to communication, curiosity and quick thinking. Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and completes an orbit in just 88 Earth days, which fits the idea of speed and restlessness. Whether or not you follow astrology, the pairing of planet and personality trait is one of the oldest surviving ideas in Western symbolism.

The largest railway on Earth

The Trans-Siberian Railway stretches from Moscow to Vladivostok, crossing thousands of kilometres of Russian landscape. Vladivostok sits on the Pacific coast, near the borders with China and North Korea, making it a fitting endpoint for a route that spans the continent. Travelling the full line takes about a week by train. It remains one of the great overland journeys in the world.

A rodent the size of a dog

Capybaras are the largest living rodents, native to South America and often found near rivers and wetlands. They are semi-aquatic, with webbed feet and eyes and nostrils set high on the head, which helps them stay partly submerged. They live in social groups and are known for tolerating other animals, including birds that perch on them. Despite their size, they are herbivores, grazing on grasses and aquatic plants.

Mushrooms and the meaning of multicellular

A mushroom is the visible fruiting body of a fungus, and fungi are multicellular organisms made of networks of thread-like cells. Amoebas and bacteria, by contrast, consist of a single cell each. That distinction matters because multicellularity allows for specialised tissues and larger body plans. Fungi were once classified as plants, but they are now recognised as a separate kingdom of life.
