Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

The garment that travelled from the Arctic to the runway

The parka began life as a practical Arctic garment, traditionally made from caribou or seal skin with a fur-lined hood to protect the face from wind and frost. Its name entered English through Russian and Aleut, reflecting the fur-trading routes of the far north. During the Second World War, the US military adopted a lightweight version for cold-weather troops, and in the decades since, the parka has become a staple of fashion as much as survival.

Four presidencies ended by assassination

Four American presidents have been killed in office: Abraham Lincoln in 1865, James A. Garfield in 1881, William McKinley in 1901 and John F. Kennedy in 1963. Lincoln's death came just days after the Civil War effectively ended, while Garfield survived for months after being shot before succumbing to infection. Several other presidents survived attempts on their lives, including Ronald Reagan, who was shot in 1981 but recovered.

Iron and its deceptively unrelated symbol

The chemical symbol Fe comes from ferrum, the Latin word for iron, which is why it looks nothing like the English name. Iron has been central to human civilisation for thousands of years - the Iron Age is named for the widespread use of the metal in tools and weapons. Today it remains the most-used metal on Earth, mostly in the form of steel.

Moscow's long history as Russia's capital

Moscow has served as Russia's capital for most of the country's modern history, though Saint Petersburg took over that role for roughly two centuries, from the early 1700s until the revolution. The city sits on the Moskva River and grew from a small settlement into the political and cultural centre of the country. Its Kremlin and Red Square remain among the most recognisable landmarks in the world.
