Lead's chemical symbol, Pb, has nothing to do with the English word. It comes from plumbum, the Latin term for the metal, which also gave us "plumbing" - a nod to the lead pipes of ancient Rome. The element sits in the same group of the periodic table as tin and carbon, and its soft, dense nature made it useful for everything from water pipes to paints before its toxicity became widely understood.
When Igor Stravinsky's The Firebird premiered in Paris in 1910, it launched his collaboration with the Ballets Russes and its impresario Serge Diaghilev. The work drew on Russian folk tales and dazzled audiences with its vivid orchestration. It was followed three years later by The Rite of Spring, whose premiere famously provoked a near-riot in the theatre - a far cry from the triumphant reception of The Firebird.
The League of Nations was founded in the aftermath of the First World War, in the early 20th century, with the aim of preventing future conflicts through collective security and diplomacy. Based in Geneva, it achieved some successes in areas like health and labour standards but struggled to enforce its decisions. Its failure to stop the slide toward a second world war led to its replacement by the United Nations after 1945.
The Brooklyn Bridge, completed in 1883, spans the East River to link Manhattan and Brooklyn - back when Brooklyn was still its own city. Designed by John A. Roebling and completed by his son Washington, it was the longest suspension bridge in the world at the time. Its distinctive stone towers and elevated promenade made it both an engineering landmark and a beloved New York icon.
Rabat is Morocco's capital, though it is far smaller than Casablanca, the country's economic hub and largest city. Situated on the Atlantic coast, Rabat houses the national government and the royal palace. The choice of a quieter administrative centre over a bustling commercial giant is a pattern seen in many countries, from Turkey to Australia.
