The 1996 Summer Olympics were held in Atlanta, Georgia, marking the first time the Games had returned to the United States since Los Angeles in 1984. The centennial edition of the modern Olympics was a huge logistical undertaking, with thousands of athletes from around the world competing across dozens of sports. One of the most memorable moments came from sprinter Michael Johnson, who won both the 200 and 400 metres in spectacular fashion.
The Danube is unusual among European rivers for the sheer number of countries it touches. It rises in the Black Forest region of Germany and flows eastwards for roughly 2,850 kilometres before emptying into the Black Sea. Along the way it passes through or borders ten countries, including Austria, Hungary, Serbia and Romania, which makes it one of the most internationally significant waterways in Europe.
Ghostbusters arrived in cinemas in 1984 and quickly became a cultural phenomenon, blending comedy, science fiction and horror into something audiences had not quite seen before. It was directed by Ivan Reitman and starred Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis as a team of paranormal investigators. The film spawned sequels, animated series and a lasting place in pop culture.
Leo Tolstoy is best known for the enormous novels War and Peace and Anna Karenina, both written in his native Russia. He came from an aristocratic family and spent much of his later life at his estate, Yasnaya Polyana, developing philosophical and moral ideas that influenced readers far beyond literature. His short stories and essays are often studied alongside his fiction.
