Beyond the answers - interesting background to this quiz

The Edinburgh doctor who changed surgery

James Young Simpson was a professor of midwifery at the University of Edinburgh when he began searching for a safer alternative to ether. In 1847 he and two assistants reportedly tested chloroform on themselves at his dining table. The substance soon became widely used in childbirth and surgery, though its medical use declined much later as safer anesthetics were developed.

A river shared by several nations

The Limpopo River is not exclusively South African, but it does form part of South Africa's northern border and flows through Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and Botswana as well. It rises in the South African highlands and arcs toward the Indian Ocean. In some regions it is known for seasonal variation, with reduced flow during dry periods.

A painting full of strange details

Hieronymus Bosch created "The Garden of Earthly Delights" as a triptych, meaning it has three panels that can be folded shut. The outer panels show a monochrome depiction of the world during creation, while the inner panels move from Eden to a crowded central scene and finally to a disturbing vision of punishment. The work remains famous for its hybrid creatures and puzzling symbolism.

Two capitals that are easy to confuse

Bratislava and Nicosia may seem straightforward on a map, but they often appear in quizzes because of similar-sounding alternatives. Bratislava lies on the Danube and borders both Austria and Hungary, making it one of the few national capitals that directly borders two other countries. Nicosia, meanwhile, is notable as a divided capital, with a buffer zone separating different administrative areas.

Jupiter's size in context

Jupiter is the largest planet in the Solar System, with a mass more than twice that of all the other planets combined. Its Great Red Spot is a storm system large enough to swallow Earth. Because it is a gas giant, it lacks a solid surface like Earth's, which makes its internal structure quite different from the rocky inner planets.
