Kemet, meaning "the black land", referred to the fertile dark soil deposited by the Nile's annual floods, in contrast to the "red land" of the surrounding desert. The name we use today, Egypt, comes to us through Greek. Ancient Egyptians also called their country Ta-meri, "the beloved land", showing that even thousands of years ago a place could carry several names depending on who was speaking and why.
The liver sits just beneath the diaphragm on the right side of the body, tucked under the rib cage. It is the largest internal organ and performs hundreds of jobs, from filtering blood to storing energy and producing bile for digestion. Unlike the appendix, which sits lower down on the right, the liver is largely protected by the ribs - one reason injuries to it are less common than you might expect.
Albert Einstein published his special theory of relativity in 1905 and the general theory a decade later. Special relativity showed that measurements of time and space depend on the observer's motion, while general relativity reframed gravity as the bending of spacetime by mass and energy. The ideas feel remote, yet they underpin GPS satellites, which must correct for relativistic effects to keep your map accurate.
James Joyce's Ulysses, published in 1922, follows Leopold Bloom through a single day in Dublin - 16 June 1904. The date is now celebrated worldwide as Bloomsday, with readings and pub crawls in Dublin and beyond. The novel's stream-of-consciousness style was radical for its time and still divides readers: some find it endlessly rich, others simply exhausting.
